Investigation Night #1

Here is something that three weeks ago I thought I would never write:

A couple nights ago I spent the evening in the dark looking and listening for ghosts at an alleged haunted house.

I don’t know whether to be impressed with myself for trying something so outside of my norm, or freaked out that I may have such a lack of judgement.

Here is what happened:

I met Dillion and Jordan at the Haven House at 8:00 to begin our investigation. Since my only other experience with ghost hunting has come from TV shows as was expecting them to have brought a lot of equipment, but I was wrong. They came with only a couple cheap cameras, a laptop, and an IPad that was loaded with paranormal investigation applications – EVP Recorder, EMF meters, and a couple of other things that I still don’t understand how they actually work.

By the way the EVP Recorder stands for “Electronic Voice Recorder” it allows the user to record very faint voices or sounds that the human ear has a hard time hearing. The thought behind this is that a ghost or spirit may try and communicate with people and say something into the mic of this device. An EMF meter measures the Electro Magnetic Field in the environment because some people have a theory that Paranormal activity can cause a spike in the EMF. Dillion told me that usually right before a unexplainable event happens you will notice that the EMF meter will go crazy for a bit.

One piece of equipment that they didn’t have was a temperture gauge to monitor any fluctuations in the ambient temps. I thought that was a pretty common tool for any ghost hunter and asked why they went without one. Dillion said it was because he doesn’t think they are useful, where Jordan said that the real reason they didn’t have one was because they misplaced it at their last investigation.

The Haven House is a ranch style house with approximately 4100 square feet, five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a full basement. As my pictures demonstrated in my past entry the house is pretty torn up as renovations are taking place…albeit slowly.

To be honest the evening spent in The Haven house was pretty boring. We spent an hour or so walking through each room trying to “pick up on the energy” of the location. Which for me meant that we spent an hour in the dark getting ourselves freaked out. During that time Jordan and Dillion filled me in the accounts they had heard from the workers who had experienced ghost-like activity.

Here are some of the highlights of the reports:

More than one of the people working in the house have reported a strange growling/moaning sound down by one of the smaller bedrooms on the first floor. The reports go on to say that the sound is often accompanied by a strong musty smell that fills the room. In their previous trips to the house this is not a phenominum that Dillion or Jordan have experienced.

There are multiple stories of people of feelings as if someone is breathing on the back of their neck. This is an occurrence that happens throughout the house. – and one collaborated by Dillion and Jordan.

There are reports of doors slamming on their own through the first floor and tools disappearing. Jordan and Dillion claim that they lost their Temp Gauge here last time when they laid it on top of the stairs and they think they heard a door slam upstairs when they were investigating the basement. Although it should be noted that they did not get any audio evidence of that door slam even though they had a recorder rolling a few yards away from the door that allegedly slammed shut.

The most compelling report came from one of the workers the contractor had to let go. The worker claimed he was working on a ladder while stripping down an electrical fixture when “something” shoved the ladder out from under his feet. He said the force of the ladder getting pushed was extreme and it caused the whole thing to fall – the worker came say with a sprained wrist and a desire to never set for back into the house.

During Dillion and Jordan’s first investigation a couple weeks ago they both said to have felt like they heard whispering (again -not captured on their EVP recorder) and felt like they were being watched the whole time. Aside from their report of the door slam and their missing tempeture gauge they had no tangible evidence from their first trip to The Haven House.

I will be honest, after our slow walk-through of the house where Dillion and Jordan shared with me the claims, I too, was even a little creeped out. I had visited the house in the daytime that morning and it had a completely different feel at night. It was dark and ever step seemed to cause the house to creak and moan. I have a feeling that this obviously uncomfortable vibe that the house gives off at night is probably the reason that my companions were quick to attribute every little thing that happened to them last time as paranormal.

After the walk-through we spent a couple of hours doing EVP sessions in different rooms in the upstairs. Dillion and Jordan would ask questions to any potential ghosts and my role was to remain absolutely silent and if we heard anything to snap a couple pictures around the room to see if I could catch something on film. Holy crap, this was painful experience for me! I don’t think I would have the patience to be a full time ghost hunter. The amount of time spent sitting I the dark without anyone speaking or moving was kind of unnerving for me. I can see how after a great deal of time sitting like this a persons mind could star playing tricks on them and start attribute normal sounds to something out of the ordinary.

In each EVP session they would poise opened ended questions that went like this:

Dillion: If there are any spirits here with us now can you please make a noise?

Jordan: Can you make a tap on the wall?

Dillion: People have heard you whisper or growl, can you do that for us now?

Jordan: Why are you still here?

And it goes on and on.

They had the same list of questions for each room and in each room nothing happened. There was no growling, no whispering, no doors slamming, nothing. It was so freaking quiet that the only sound I heard was Jordan’s overly worked digestive system breaking down her dinner. 🙂

At one point in one of the guest bedrooms Dillion was sure he heard a footstep and he ask that I take a couple pictures to see if there was anything that would show up. Here is one of those pictures:

We spent about five hours wandering around the upstairs of The Haven House looking for more evidence and in my book we didn’t find anything. To be fair, Jordan and Dillion have a to of audio recordings to sort though to see if anything was picked up. They are going to spend the weekend doing that and if anything shows up we will post it here.

Oh, and some good news on the way out we found their temperature reader sitting in the corner of the front hallway. Dillion was trying to convince me that this was poltergeist activity, where I see this as simply as someone found it on the ground and placed it in the corner so nobody would step on it. I don’t think ghosts are that considerate. 🙂

Next week we have two evening investigations. On Tuesday we will be going to a warehouse for a local grocery where the owner is making claims that ones are getting overturned and screams an be heard. Then next Thursday we will be back at The Haven House to investigate the basement and spend more time listening for growls and looking for more shit that Dillion has lost. Ha!

The Haven House Walk Through

Posted in Haven Investigation with tags , , , , , on September 26, 2012 by R.S

This morning I was able to take a quick walk-through of the house we will be investigating tonight. I wanted to see it in the daylight, so Dillion set it up so the contractor who has been working on he house let me in before they started their daily work on it.

I will post the pictures of the location below, but I thought I would give you a few details to why we are doing a paranormal investigation in this particular house. Here is the timeline of events that I have been given:

August 2010 – The Haven House was purchased by a newlywed couple that (understandingly so) wishes to have their names withheld. They bought it from a bank that had obtained it when the previous occupant (Mrs. Haven?) of the house died and the property was left to them in a trust so that they would sell it. The husband (who is the nephew of the contractor who is remodeling the house now) purchased the home knowing it was going to need a lot of work before they could live in it. The home was built in 1951 and had only had three different families live in it during those 60+ years – a fact that seems fairly unbelieveable to me. I will be doing so checking on the history of the house and its occupants in the next couple days. I will provide more info on that in the next few posts I hope.

2010-2012 -The house remained unoccupied and untouched for over a year and a half. The couple that purchased it had run into some financial trouble that kept them from obtaining the money needed to start the $200,000 K project that they had planned on when they purchased it. The husband worked on it by himself when he could but suffered a significant injury to his hands while pulling tile in mid 2011 and could not do any of the work on his own. It should be noted that apparently the gentleman worked in this house on his own for hours at a time and never reported anything strange happening.

July 2012 – The couple was able to get their loan and the remodeling of the home began. They started tearing down walls, working on plumbing, and taking up the floors and carpet. According the the led contractor I spoke to this morning it seems that once they started working in July some “abnormal” events began to take place. He was not very interested in talking to me in specifics but he mentioned that it had to do with a doors slamming, unexplainable voices shouting, and a couple of weird accidents that a couple members of his crew had happen to them. He wanted to be clear in telling me that he had not actually experienced any of this himself, that these were exports coming in from the people who work for him. The lead contractor wanted me to understand that he does no believe in this “kind of shit” and thinks that this is some sort of “group-think paranoia” that is going on.

He admitted that he was having a hard time finding workers who would commit to spends a great deal of time at The Haven house and was so frustrated that he actually had to severe working relationships with a few of his people. The remodel was only going to take four months, but since things were going so slow it looked like they would be looking at 7-9 months now. I asked if any of the people who work for him who had experienced any of the strange events would be willing to speak with me. H said he would ask, but not to get my hopes up high.

July-September 2011 – It appears that not much work has been done during this time. According to Dillion that this is causing a serious strain on the couple that wants to move in. They put their other home up for sale and are unsure where they will stay if their new home isn’t finished soon. They are pissed off because the reason the remodel is so delayed is because their contractor is having a hard time keeping people working due to them being so spooked. It is a very awkward situation because the contractor is the uncle of the husband and he is kind of stuck with him doing the work. On a side note, if I were them I would fire my Uncle and hire someone who does not employ nut jobs. 🙂

Full disclosure: This couple are good friends of Dillion, Jordan, and myself.

About two weeks ago they contacted Dillion and asked if he would be willing to come and check out The Haven House to see if there is anything to the reports that they have been getting from the contractors crew. Dillion and Jordan started spending time in the house and have so far not really experienced anything other than “creepy vibes” from it. Which, I believe is code for “Jack-Shit”.
We will be going back tonight to conduct a three-hour investigation which will include audio recordings and picture taking as well as some other mumbo jumbo.

Here are the pictures I took this morning and by the way at no point did I experience anything or catch any “creepy vibes”. Maybe I didn’t smoke enough weed before going? LOL.

Just a little backstory

Posted in Personal Thoughts with tags , , , , on September 24, 2012 by R.S

In just a few days I will go with Dillion and Jordan to a house that they have been investigating for the past couple weeks. Before I go on that adventure with them I think that I should be honest with you all…

I’m a skeptic.

Now, I realize that us skeptics all get bunched together as nerdy looking people who have green Vulcan blood pumping through our bodies. In the real world we skeptics are the killjoy at any cocktail party who use logic and reason to calm down any drunk yo-yo who brings up the UFO or Chupacabras they saw on a camping trip years ago. In the movies we are the nerdy looking people who die brutally at the hand the paranormal enemy they were just denying the existence of.

The truth is most skeptics are just folks who need to see things in order to believe them. You have an angel visiting you every night in your apartment? That’s great, but unless I’m there with you and get to see this winged entity I’m not going to believe you just because you say so. You have a picture of a glowing orb on your basement that you are certain is the energy of a spirit who is floating around your couch? Ok…however before you call Dr. Venkman and the rest of the Ghostbusters II would like for you to sit down with me and I will show you how simple lighting issues or exposure problems can create these “orbs”.

To be sure, most of the claims of things like this can be explained away with three simple explanations:

1) The person reporting this event is crazy.
2) The person reporting this event is not gathering evidence properly and using compromised photos, audio files, video, etc as proof.
3) The person reporting this event is simply lying.

Unfortunately most of the time I think that most paranormal claims can be explained away by using. #3. People lie and exaggerate all of the time. They desperately want to be the special person who sees the alien, mythological creature, or poltergeist so that they feel important and people will listen to them. They want to be the witness to something that will make them feel as if God himself has chosen them to be present to a moment so they can be tell the world about it. When those events don’t happen, they do the next best thing…they make it up.

I don’t blame those folks too much. They are just storytellers who are trying to make our world more exciting than it really is. They are just being a poor mans George Lucas. I want ghosts and aliens to be real because that would make our world more interesting. If my garage were haunted it would mean that I have proof that the afterlife exists and I can stop having panic attacks about the nothingness I believe that awaits me when I push out my last breath.

Like Mulder, I want to believe. I really do, but I can’t until I see it with my own eyes, just like Thomas needed to touch the wounds of Jesus, I too need some sort of physical proof before I will even begin the process of opening up my brain to any of this being real. Please note that just because I made a Jesus reference that does not mean I believe I the existence if a Man/God that walked on Earth 2000 years ago, because I don’t. I have never met Jesus. He has never appeared to me – well except for that one time in Vegas where that drunk homeless guy dressed as Jesus asked me to buy him some smokes..but I don’t think that counts.

I know that Dillion is hoping for some sort of conversion for me by the end of my month of ghost hunting with him. He has explained to me in great detail the things that he and Jordan have already claimed to have experienced. My hope is by the end of this month I will actually help him be converted. To start looking for the the real reason a house creaks, or why they think they heard a voice, or why their electronic equipment suddenly “freaks out” while on an investigation. Although, I kind of have a feeling that getting him to surrender any of his predispositions beliefs on this will be pretty difficult for me to do in just a few weeks time. What he really needs is shock therapy. :). I kid! I kid!

I preparations for this I have been watching a lot of terrible ghost investigation shows on cable tv. Holy shit they are terrible. I cannot believe that advertisers pay to have their products sold during those blocks of time. It is just a bunch of people running around in the dark with night vision cameras scaring each other. It is so ridiculous that I will probably designate y next entry for this log to show you examples of how big of a sham these shows are. If I have time I will try and get that entry in before I head out with Dillion and Jordan on Wednesday night for my first chance to watch them work. They are certain that I am going to have some really solid evidence To share with all of you.

The real evidence I am probably going to discover at the end of this is whether or not he and his girlfriends are either just crazy, using a poor scientific model for conducting experiments, or they are just flat out telling us all a really good story.

Either way it should be interesting – and if it turns out that I am wrong and that little Casper The Ghosts actually do exist I will make sure that I ask them why in the gel they are hanging out in graveyards and train depots instead of going to heaven for all the milk and cookies they can eat…
